Getting to Know the (New) AASL National School Library Standards
Our session will combine presentation and interaction among workshop attendees. Participants will actively engage in a “crosswalk” of the AASL standard strands and indicators, and define and detail how the AASL Standards align to their current library instruction. Participants will leave with a template to continue aligning instruction to the standards, a ready to use prepared “persuasive message” to share their administrators, and a AASL standards resource list to continued exploration and personal professional development.

Conferences are always filled with so many wonderful presentations - and so little time to do everything you want to do. Feel free to join at any point that our session is in progress or to "get a taste" and move on to another session. We are flexible and welcome everyone. No matter if you stay for the whole session or a part of it, you will know move about the AASL Standards that are setting the standard for excellence in school libraries across the country.

Opening Keynote: I’m a good person! Isn’t that enough?
Using historical and media images, Debby examines how she used her white-skewed belief system to interpret the world around her. Socialized on a narrow worldview, Debby explores how she spent decades silently reaffirming harmful, archaic racial patterns instead of questioning the racial disparities and tensions she could see and feel. This presentation and dialog is designed to support white people in making the paradigm shift from ‘fixing’ and ‘helping’ those believed to be inferior, to focusing on internalized white superiority and its role in perpetuating racism at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, and cultural levels.

Creating literacy environments: Every child a literacy learner
This session is about relevant literacy environments using low cost strategies that include evidence based literacy instruction and high quality literature to create literacy rich environments. The presentation will include examples from schools and highlight specific titles that will have students wanting to read. It will include both suggestions to alter the physical environment as well as how to create virtual spaces where students highlight and share what they are reading as well as spaces that motivate reading. The goal for the presentation is to explore strategies to create community literacy love that might increase the likelihood that a child or more will read and write more. Examples of strategies include Interest Development Centers (IDCs), Book Graffiti, FoundPoetry, and Pop Up Literacy Love spaces.

Equity Action Steps
We all want to provide equity in our libraries and schools, yet this is often an overwhelming challenge. Our responsibility as librarians is to provide a safe space for everyone, include diverse narratives in the collection and displays, incorporate diverse examples and topics when conducting research, and sensitivity of different needs when navigating the space or participating in events.

In this interactive roundtable session, we will explore small steps we can take that will have a large impact. Participants of this session will examine what equity looks like in a library space, collection, and program, and why one should perform an equity audit. The session will provide opportunities to brainstorm, collaborate, and leave with concrete ideas to take home and implement. Together, we will work to ensure that libraries truly are for everyone.

Leveling the playing field: Interrupting patterns of privilege
Using a series of pointed questions, Debby works with participants to build a graphic map of the groups people belong to because of social locations and historical roles in U.S. society. Participants will think together about how various groups have and have not had access to rights, resources, representation, and respect, ultimately revealing the social positioning and impacts of white privilege and dispelling illusions of a level playing field. Once the graphic has been created, Debby leads participants in an exploration of social beliefs, attitudes, and dynamics that perpetuate power and privilege patterns, even when best intentions are in play. Participants will leave with two powerful tools to analyze power dynamics and cultivate transformative cultures in their circles of influence.

Best practices for school and public library partnerships from the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP)
Amazing things can happen when schools and public libraries collaborate, from community read and homework help programs to cooperative collection development and staffing. But with limited time and support, how can school librarians create these partnerships and keep them going? MA Library System Consultants, Christi Farrar and April Mazza, will share partnership best practices from the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP), the national consortium of states that supports summer learning in libraries, gleaned from hundreds of member librarians and backed by research.

Closing Keynote: From reading to writing
The library was a second home for me as a boy, and as an adult I’ve written most of my books while sitting in a library. All good days begin when the front doors open at the BPL or Athenaeum,  and when I say “good morning” to the librarians and staff, and then I sit down and open a book, and then I open my journal and pencase and work some words onto paper, and at the end of the day the library closes … yet my mind, even at rest, is always drifting around like the library cat.
The first portion of my keynote will march through my primary publications thus far—and cast an eye toward future projects.

My career has had it ups and downs. My first twelve books were rejected—mostly for the standard reasons: uninteresting characters, loopy plots, themes with no point, and problems with no solutions. The usual suspects for “rejections.” Most recently, I’ve had a different kind of rejection—an adult picture book—"A Suicide Bomber Sits in a Library”--that was in a prepublication state when it was perceived to be unsuitable for publication due to cultural insensitivity content, and thus the illustrated book was cancelled, yet the story continues to exist in the Amnesty International Anthology on ‘themes of freedom’ where it was originally solicited and published.

The cancelled illustrated version of SBSL will be the second portion of the presentation.

The third portion will be a question and answer session led by Sandy Kelly, MSLA Past President
